🔹 What are Tides?
Tides are the periodic rise and fall of sea level caused mainly by the gravitational pull of the:
- 🌙 Moon
- ☀️ Sun
👉 The Moon has the strongest effect because it is closer to Earth.
🌊 Types of Tides
1. 🔼 High Tide
- When sea level rises
- Occurs when water is pulled towards the Moon
- Happens twice a day
🔹 Effects
- Helps ships enter ports 🚢
- Can cause coastal flooding
2. 🔽 Low Tide
- When sea level falls
- Water moves away from the shore
- Also occurs twice a day
🔹 Effects
- Exposes sea floor (useful for fishing) 🎣
- Can make navigation difficult
🌗 Special Types of Tides
1. 🌑 Spring Tide
- Occurs during New Moon & Full Moon
- Sun, Earth, and Moon are in a straight line
👉 Causes very high high tides and very low low tides
2. 🌓 Neap Tide
- Occurs during First & Last Quarter Moon
- Sun and Moon are at right angles
👉 Causes moderate tides (less difference)
⚙️ How Tides Work
👉 Based on Gravitational Force:
- Moon pulls ocean water → High tide
- Opposite side also experiences high tide due to Earth’s rotation
- Areas in between → Low tide
📊 Quick Difference
| Feature | High Tide 🔼 | Low Tide 🔽 |
|---|---|---|
| Water Level | High | Low |
| Cause | Pull of Moon/Sun | Water moves away |
| Frequency | 2 times/day | 2 times/day |
🌍 Importance of Tides
1. Navigation 🚢
- Helps ships move safely into harbors
2. Fishing 🎣
- Fishermen depend on tidal timings
3. Energy ⚡
- Used to generate tidal energy
🎯 Important Exam Points
- Tides occur due to Moon + Sun gravity
- 2 High tides + 2 Low tides daily
- Spring tide = highest difference
- Neap tide = lowest difference
